What is a Pinard…?

A Pinard or Pinard’s stethoscope is used for listening to foetal heartbeat..

Initially they were made from various materials but now are plastic or sometimes metal…

When one of the mid-wives on staff at the Maternity ward of the local hospital was retiring, I was asked to provide a small presento…a turned timber pinard on a stand…

Why make one when you can make 3… and I know that there will be more retirees to present these pinards to…

As most of you know I do not personally have a lathe… so it fell upon my good mate Col to turn the pinards and while he was at it the stands as well…

He used Forrest Red Gum for the pinard and Tasmanian Oak for the base.. Nice contrast don’t you think…?
